Spitting: some gay men love it, while others are absolutely repulsed. It’s one of those polarizing topics that sparks discussions or debates among gay men online. But why does this seemingly simple act evoke such strong reactions?

For some, spit is a major turn-on—a symbol of raw, uninhibited passion. It can be a tactile way to enhance intimacy or add an edge to sexual encounters. Spitting during oral sex or onto erogenous zones is often portrayed in gay porn as an act of dominance or submission, amplifying power dynamics. Many enthusiasts view it as primal, an unfiltered expression of desire. Others say the act makes them feel connected to their partner on a deeply animalistic level.

However, not everyone feels the same. For some men, spit is an instant mood killer. Take for example our very own Adam4Adam blog reader called terminator222, who wrote:

I noticed a lot of porn lately consist of spitting. When I see a person getting head, and the giver spit on the dick, it turns my stomach. When a person spit on a person’s asshole, that’s a huge turn off. If a person spit in a person’s mouth or anywhere on them, it grosses me out. Spit kills the mood for me! Most times spit stinks. I wonder how other guys that respond to blogs feel about spit/spitting. Thanks.

For many, the aversion to spit stems from hygiene concerns, sensory sensitivity, or personal boundaries. The texture and smell can be unpleasant for some, while others associate spitting with disrespect or degradation.

Interestingly, spit has been fetishized in certain subcultures. Known as “spit play,” it can range from spitting on specific body parts to swapping spit in ways that blur the lines of traditional intimacy. It’s about pushing limits, exploring taboos, and embracing kink.

And then there’s the humor of it all. The meme “Hawk Tuah,” inspired by the sound of someone gathering spit to hurl it, has taken the internet by storm. While it’s meant to mock the act, it also underscores how deeply ingrained spit has become in discussions of sex and intimacy.

So, Adam4Adam blog readers, what’s your take? Does spitting add to the experience, or is it a hard pass for you? How does this act factor into your preferences or boundaries in the bedroom? Do you think the current portrayal of spit in gay porn influences expectations in real life?
