Lil Nas X created an uproar on social media after he gave what BuzzFeed described as “a legendary performance” at the 2021 BET Awards on Sunday night. The Old Town Road singer performed a royal rendition of Montero (Call Me By Your Name) which was inspired by Michael Jackson’s Remember The Time.

Lil Nas X gave a hot and riveting performance. In addition, he sparked online debate because he kissed one of his male dancers during the end of his show.

The reaction was immediate.  Some netizens said the kiss was reminiscent of Adam Lambert’s 2009 American Music Awards on-stage kiss with his keyboard player. Lambert’s For Your Entertainment performance was, at the time, described as “racy” and “shocking.”

Then, there were also those who criticized Madonna for comparing Lil Nas X’s kiss to her very own infamous kiss with Britney Spears during the 2003 MTV Video Music Awards. Madonna shared on her Instagram story a picture of Lil Nas X’s kiss plus a picture of her kissing Britney Spears at the 2003 MTV VMAs with a caption that said: “#DidItFirst.”

Lil Nas X however, was quick to defend Madonna, tweeting, “me and madonna are friends. it’s just a joke.”

Adam Lambert, on the other hand, told Billboard on Tuesday: “I thought it was hot,” Lambert said when asked about his opinion on Lil Nas X’s performance. “He’s really giving it to us. I think he is definitely like the gay pop star that is 2021 — he’s bold, he’s controversial, he’s pushing boundaries. That’s what we want our pop stars to do. It’s just taken this long to have it be a gay one.”

Meanwhile, fans were thrilled about the kiss. Some of them wished “there was a superstar like him 20 years ago when I was growing up.” But there were also those who criticized Lil Nas X and bombarded him with homophobic comments but he replied and said:

“y’all hate yourselves so much. y’all live your lives trying your best to appease straight ppl. y’all are uncomfortable with what i do because y’all are afraid they will be uncomfortable with you. work on yourselves, i love who i am and whatever i decide to do. get there.”

Of course, Lil Nas X also took the time to thank his fans. On a separate tweet, he first revealed that it took him “a lot of time to mentally prepare for this performance.” He shared that he had a hard time calming his nerves even during the performance and that he was “trembling knowing that i was performing something like that in front of my straight peers.” The he added, “thank you guys for the love.”
