Elton John and Bernie Taupin’s (I’m Gonna) Love Me Again from the Rocketman soundtrack won the Academy Award for Best Original Song. Reportedly, this is Elton John’s second Oscar win and fourth nomination while it’s Taupin’s first Oscar win and first nomination.

In his speech, Bernie Taupin—Elton John’s longtime lyricist and collaborator—thanked Rocketman’s full cast and crew, David Furnish, and Elton John. He said:

Needless to say, mostly this goes to the people who were involved in Rocketman, a little bit of this is in every one of their hearts. David Furnish, your tenacity and dedication has driven this train all the way here.

Being here with this guy, I don’t have words for it, this is justification for 53 years of just hammering it out and doing what we do.</blockquote>

For his part, Elton John thanked his husband David Furnish, his twins, Taupin, and everybody involved in Rocketman. He said:

Thank you to Bernie, who has been the constant thing in my life when I was screwed up, when I was normal, he was there for me.

David, I love you so much. To my beautiful boys who are watching this in Sydney, how much do I love you? Daddy loves you.”

Rocketman is a 2019 film based on the life of the multi-awarded English singer, pianist, and composer Sir Elton John (born Reginald Kenneth Dwight). It stars Taron Egerton as Elton John, Jamie Bell as Bernie Taupin, Richard Madden as John Reid, and Bryce Dallas Howard as Sheila Eileen. Rocketman is directed by Dexter Fletcher and is written by Lee Hall.

Elton John has also raised $6.4million during his 28th Annual Elton John AIDS Foundation Academy Awards Viewing Party that was attended by the likes of Jonathan Van Ness, Caitlyn Jenner, Derek Hough, Sharon Stone, Karamo Brown, Christina Hendricks, and Heidi Klum to name a few. In his speech at the viewing party, Elton John underscored the importance of coming together in order to beat HIV/AIDS, he said:

But most importantly, tonight we have come together to raise urgently needed funds and awareness for the LGBT community at risk or living with HIV in the U.S. and around the world.

A gay man is 27 times more likely to have HIV than their straight peers, so tonight helps us to remind people that we still have a long way to go to end the AIDS epidemic.</blockquote>

Other Academy Award 2020 winners include Brad Pitt (Actor in a Supporting Role for Once Upon a Time…in Hollywood), Parasite (Best Picture, which is also the winner for International Feature Film), Joaquin Phoenix (Actor in a Leading Role, Joker), and Renée Zellweger (Actress in a Leading Role, Judy).
