We all have been hearing about Richard Armitage these past few days because of his much talked about pillow scene on Obsession. If you don’t know what that is, Obsession is Netflix’s new thriller television series based on Josephine Hart’s 1991 novel titled Damage.
Obsession, follows the story of a surgeonnamed William Farrow (played by Richard Armitage) who engages in a scandalous affair with his son Jay’s fiancée Anna Barton (played by Charlie Murphy). Their steamy nights and the thrill that the affair brings to his life feeds his obsession about Anna, but how long can they keep this relationship a secret?

The series, which was released on Netflix on 13 April 2023, also stars Indira Varma as Ingrid Farrow, Rish Shah as Jay Farrow, and Sonera Angel as Sally Farrow.
Speaking with The Evening Standard, Armitage revealed that he did talk to his partner about his full-frontal nude scene, “We did talk about it. I reassured him that it was all going to be fine, and we were being well looked after.”
While his coming out was subtle, the 51-year-old actor said he already did come out a long time ago. “[Coming out] happened when I was 19–to anybody who mattered–and I was always waiting for that question to punch me in the face, and it never did,” Armitage tells Radio Times Magazine. “I thought, ‘Are people being polite, or is it that they don’t want to know?’”
He adds, “I don’t know that I ever wanted to put myself in front of the work I was doing, anything about my family or personal life. I just thought, ‘Let the work speak for itself.’”
As to why Armitage chose to come out publicly at this point in time, he said that it’s all thanks to the younger generation. “I love the conversation with the younger generation. I love the idea that whatever gender, sexuality, the fluidity of who you love, how you identify, is not fixed.”
Further, he said, “That was always a thing: If I declare who I am and my sexuality, then I’m saying it’s fixed and I don’t know that, or if I might feel something for somebody further down the line. I doubt it, but I don’t know. It’s more relaxed now. As a writer and producer, I do wonder if anybody has to be defined by who they’re in love with.”
Armitage is best-known for playing the role of Thorin in The Hobbit franchise; he also played the role of Trevor Belmont in Netflix’s Castlevania series, and as Claude Becker in Ocean’s Eight to name a few.
