The new crime drama Scarpetta brings one of the most famous characters in forensic fiction to television. The series—adapted from Patricia Cornwell’s bestselling novels—stars Nicole Kidman as Dr. Kay Scarpetta, a brilliant and determined forensic pathologist whose work places her at the center of some of the most disturbing murder investigations. The show is available to stream exclusively on Amazon Prime Video, where viewers can watch the full season on demand.
Scarpetta follows Dr. Kay Scarpetta as she returns to Virginia to resume her role as the state’s chief medical examiner after being away for years. Known for her expertise in forensic science and her ability to uncover truths hidden within crime scenes and autopsy reports, Scarpetta becomes involved in a complex murder investigation that appears to be connected to a decades-old case. As she digs deeper into the mystery, she uncovers secrets that intertwine with her personal life and past relationships, forcing her to confront both professional and emotional challenges. The story blends modern forensic investigation with psychological drama.
The show blends two timelines, one in the present and one in the past, revealing how earlier investigations and personal relationships shape Scarpetta’s current pursuit of justice. Beyond solving crimes, the series explores the emotional and psychological toll that forensic work takes on investigators.
The series features a strong ensemble cast alongside Kidman. Jamie Lee Curtis appears as Dorothy Farinelli, Scarpetta’s sister, whose complicated relationship with Kay adds emotional tension to the narrative. Bobby Cannavale portrays Pete Marino, a former detective who works closely with Scarpetta as a forensic operations specialist. Simon Baker plays Benton Wesley, an FBI profiler who becomes both a professional ally and a significant figure in Scarpetta’s personal life. Meanwhile, queer actress Ariana DeBose appears as Lucy Farinelli-Watson, Scarpetta’s intelligent and tech-savvy niece. She is a lesbian and is Dorothy’s daughter.
The television adaptation was developed and written by Emmy-nominated writer Liz Sarnoff, who serves as showrunner for the series. Several episodes are directed by filmmaker David Gordon Green, known for blending character-driven storytelling with suspenseful narratives. Both Kidman and Curtis also serve as executive producers.
With its mix of forensic science, psychological drama, and suspenseful storytelling, Scarpetta offers a compelling crime series for fans of investigative thrillers and character-driven mysteries.
Patricia Cornwell’s Scarpetta novels have sold millions of copies worldwide and are widely credited with popularizing forensic science in crime fiction.
Happy viewing!
The few clips I have seen make this show look like shit. Is it a comedy, with Jamie Lee Curtis overacting ,yes it is. Is it a drama? Probably ,but with JLC its hard to tell. I’ve read a few of the Scarpetta novels abd they were good but this show does not make me interested at all in any way.
Amen! Just needless propaganda because of this:
queer actress Ariana DeBose appears as Lucy Farinelli-Watson, Scarpetta’s intelligent and tech-savvy niece. She is a lesbian and is Dorothy’s daughter.
The show is bad; barely related to the characters in the novels other than their names. I labored through the first 2 episodes and had to throw in the towel. Awful writing, pedestrian directing, excessive family drama unrelated to the mystery, over-the-top/cartoonish “acting” by Jamie Lee Curtis, and everyone else is sleep-walking through their roles. The present/past storylines are distracting along with the silly AI character. Bloody awful.
For me, she’s like Tom Cruise. When he acts, I only see Tom Cruise.
When she acts, I only see Nicole Kidman.
Whatever characters they’re trying to portray don’t come through.
They’re movies are usually excellent for numerous reasons. Just wish there were other actors.
Exactly! I can’t STAND Nicole Kidman!
