Are you into action movies, guys? If so, you might want to check Netflix’s new movie titled The Old Guard.

In The Old Guard, Academy Award-winning actressCharlize Theronplays the role of Andromache of Scythia, aka Andy. Andy is the leader of a small, covert group of immortal mercenaries composed of Booker (played by Matthias Schoenaerts), longtime couple Joe (Marwan Kenzari) and Nicky (Luca Marinelli), and Niles (KiKi Layne)—the newest member of their team.

Unknown to the world, this small group had been hiding in the shadows for hundreds of years making a difference in their own way. Up until now that is, when suddenly, life throws them a curve ball and their existence was exposed, their lives threatened. 

We will stop here with the spoilers. All I can say is that the film is great, not to mention that the story is different—fresh and suspenseful and, did we tell you already that The Old Guard has LGBTQ representation? 

Not the half-hearted efforts that we’ve seen in the past like the, you know, blink-and-you’ll-miss-it LGBTQ scenes. And certainly, The Old Guard is not the kind of story that will keep you guessing whether the character is really gay just as they’d said in the news… or not. I’ve had my share of this kind—news articles would say this and that film has a gay character but for the life of me, I’ve already watched the film twice and I still couldn’t see how they could say that the character in question is gay. With The Old Guard though, it’s worth noting that there’s nothing wishy-washy or ambiguous about the characters’ sexual orientations.

The Old Guard isdirected by Gina Prince-Bythewood andis based on Greg Rucka’s acclaimed graphic novel series that you can purchase here. The film also stars Chiwetel Ejiofor as Copley, Mette Towley as Jordan, Harry Melling as Merrick, and Van Veronica Ngo as Quynh to name a few.
