To say that we are suffering from excessive anxiety and stress because of the COVID-19 pandemic is an understatement.
A lot of people have lost their jobs because numerous businesses went under, having been unable to cope with the financial strain. Moreover, millions of people got sick from coronavirus; worse, a great deal of them died from COVID-19. There’s also the fear of contracting COVID-19, worries about where to get the money for food and rent next, among many other things.
Because we live in such stressful times, it’s no surprise if the situation has dampened our libido or killed our sex drive. Worse, stress and anxiety can also give us erectile dysfunction.
But what is erectile dysfunction? NIH defined it as a “condition in which you are unable to get or keep an erection firm enough for satisfactory sexual intercourse.” Its symptoms include: “being able to get an erection sometimes, but not every time you want to have sex; being able to get an erection, but not having it last long enough for sex; and being unable to get an erection at any time,” says NIH.
According to WebMD, “Psychological factors are responsible for about 10%-20% of all cases of erectile dysfunction, or ED.” They cited the following as the most common psychological causes of ED: stress, either caused by your job, financial or marital or relationship problems, etc.
Anxiety is another. WebMD explained that a man who experienced ED once may “become overly worried that the problem will happen again.” Unfortunately, the fear of sexual failure or having “performance anxiety” can lead to ED. Other causes mentioned include: depression, indifference (due to age and a “subsequent loss of interest in sex,” medication, etc.), low self-esteem, and guilt (“that they are not satisfying their partner”).
