Speaking of which, a gay man online recently asked, “What was considered normal in gay porn 10-20 years ago that would be deemed as ‘controversial’ today?”
One of the most common answers was surprisingly simple: “Condoms.” For many years, condom use was standard in mainstream gay porn, particularly during the height of HIV awareness campaigns. Today, condomless scenes are far more common in commercial and independent content, leading some viewers to see older productions as a snapshot of a different era.
In addition, others pointed to something that has largely disappeared in the age of creator-driven content: “Plots and storylines. Not necessarily controversial today, just wildly uncommon in this OnlyFans era.” Another commenter added: “I miss those horribly acted and scripted scenes. They were so great.” Whether it was over-the-top dialogue, improbable setups, or campy performances, many viewers remember story-driven productions as part of what gave older gay porn its unique charm.
Meanwhile, one gay man’s response took a more humorous approach: “Gay people.” The comment was likely referencing ongoing discussions about how professional studios hire gay-for-pay actors, and how some influencers and content creators market themselves today.
Further, some respondents brought up content that generated controversy even years ago: “Twins doing scenes together.” Another commenter chimed in: “Remember the Peters twins? That was controversial.” The exchange emphasized how certain themes and marketing tactics have long been subjects of debate among viewers.
On the other hand, others noted that attitudes toward consent have changed significantly over time. “All those ‘forced, non-consensual’ scenarios.”
While fantasy-based roleplay remains popular, audiences today often scrutinize how consent is portrayed and communicated in adult content more closely than in previous decades.
Moreover, issues related to age gaps were also mentioned in the discussion. “Age gaps? Now that we live in an age where people think 24-year-olds are being ‘groomed’ by guys a few years older than them?”
