The Netherlands formally swore in its first openly gay prime minister on Monday, February 23, 2026, as 38-year-old Rob Jetten took the oath of office, marking a historic moment in both Dutch and LGBTQ+ political history. Jetten, leader of the centrist Democrats’ 66 (D66) party, was sworn in by King Willem-Alexander at the Royal Palace in The Hague alongside his new Cabinet, ushering in a minority coalition government tasked with navigating a tightly divided parliament.
“Proud to be able to do this together,” Jetten wrote in a social media post ahead of the ceremony. “In a new phase, with a great responsibility and above all a joint promise to work for everyone in the Netherlands.”
At age 38, Jetten also became the youngest prime minister in Dutch history, breaking the previous age record while representing a generational shift in the nation’s political leadership. His rise follows a razor-thin victory in an October 2025 snap election that saw the centrist bloc edge out far-right challengers, the Party for Freedom (PVV), in a highly polarized landscape.
Jetten is no newcomer to national politics. A decade after first entering parliament, he previously served as Minister for Climate and Energy in the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Climate Policy, where he championed broad environmental reforms and gained attention for his pragmatic style. His leadership of D66 has focused on issues ranging from social equality to stronger European cooperation, reflecting the party’s pro-EU and progressive agenda.
LGBTQ+ advocacy groups have welcomed Jetten’s appointment as a milestone for representation. COC Nederland, a prominent Dutch LGBTQ organization, issued a statement saying that Jetten’s premiership shows “that your sexual orientation doesn’t have to matter,” adding that Dutch society can now see a gay leader at the nation’s highest political level without it being an exception. “You can become a construction worker, a doctor, a lawyer, and even a prime minister,” said COC Nederland.
Jetten’s personal life has also drawn public interest, as he is engaged to Nicolás Keenan, an Argentine field hockey player and two-time Pan American Games gold medalist who competed in the Tokyo 2020 and Paris 2024 Summer Olympics.
Reportedly, Rob Jetten and Nicolás Keenan first crossed paths in everyday settings, repeatedly bumping into each other at local supermarkets and coffee shops in The Hague. After several chance encounters, Jetten decided to make the first move, sending Keenan a direct message on Instagram. The message led to regular conversations, and the two officially began dating in 2020.
Keenan later described the start of their relationship as immediate and natural. “It was a connection at first sight,” he told the Daily Mail in an interview. “We connected, and suddenly I had someone that could just talk, talk, talk [for hours].”
The couple announced their engagement during the 2024 Paris Olympics, where Keenan was competing. They are set to wed this summer 2026. Read here and here for more information on this story.
Congratulations Rob. What an awesome achievement at such a young age. Sure you will do great things for your country. Congrats on your engagement as well. Looks like a happy couple.

A great man, who happens to be great looking becomes Prime Minister of a great country.
Another great man, who happens to be great looking, becomes an Olympian.
And then they plan to be a great couple.
Can’t wait for Hallmark to jump on the storyline.
If you can frame it, you can market it to sell it!
I think it’s wonderful, forward thinking, modern and advanced, comparably. More personal; what an incredible achievement for someone so young, I wish him and hubby to be, every happiness. Lastly, I really wish him success in his new role for his country.
How disappointing he is no longer single, but how nice for him. Why can’t we all find the right mate?
yo, Virgil, you might wanna discus’ it with da’ Lord?
Yo, Virgil, you might wanna take ‘t up with da’ Lord?
Several guys I know have told me the same thing over the years. Straight and Gay, actually. “When I decided I wanted to finally find ‘My Perfect Partner’, I just kept meeting and dismissing those who weren’t ‘perfect’. It was only after I stopped looking for ‘perfect’, I met them within a year. By chance. And only after I stopped searching, critiquing and looked at everything they were, not just what I was ‘looking’ for.”
Their mates were looking for the same thing.
I hope one day you find the right mate. I find interesting guys at my gym and in church.
