Bret Hanna-Shuford, the beloved Broadway performer, influencer, and one-half of the popular Broadway Husbands social media channel, has died at the age of 46. He passed away on January 3, 2026, after a brief but intense battle with a rare and aggressive form of cancer and immune system disease in Orlando, Florida.

His husband, Stephen Hanna-Shuford, confirmed the news on the couple’s Instagram account, sharing that Bret died peacefully, surrounded by family. “It is with a heavy heart that we share the news that early this morning we said goodbye to the most amazing man, husband and Papa in the universe,” Stephen wrote. “Our hearts are broken but we will continue to make him proud of us…”

Born on May 20, 1979, in Beaumont, Texas, Bret Hanna-Shuford knew he wanted to perform from a young age. He earned a bachelor’s degree in theater from Wagner College and made his Broadway debut in Chitty Chitty Bang Bang in 2005 before going on to appear in several major productions. His Broadway credits included Beauty and the Beast, The Little Mermaid, Wicked, Amazing Grace, and Cirque du Soleil Paramour. His work spanned ensemble parts, understudy roles, and principal performances that showcased his versatility as an actor and singer.

Beyond the stage, Bret appeared in film and television, including guest roles on series such as Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, Only Murders in the Building, The Good Fight, and a small part in The Wolf of Wall Street—bringing his stage talents to broader audiences.

Offstage, Bret and Stephen built a large following as Broadway Husbands, a joint social media brand where they shared creative dance videos, insights into life as LGBTQ+ performers, and personal moments from their family life. The couple documented their path to parenthood and their joy in raising their son, Maverick, who was born in 2022. Their work made them recognizable not just within the theatre community but among LGBTQ fans and fans of performing arts alike.

In the summer of 2025, Bret was diagnosed with Hemophagocytic Lymphohistiocytosis (HLH) and peripheral T-cell lymphoma (PTCL), both rare and aggressive conditions that affect the body’s immune system and blood cells. Despite a courageous fight—sharing updates with supporters and spending months in the hospital—his health declined rapidly.

In an October post from the hospital, Bret spoke openly about his struggle: “I really want to go home. I really miss my son, a lot, and my husband. But I’m sending so much love to you, because your love to me has been incredible.”

The outpouring of grief from the Broadway community and beyond has been immediate. A close friend described the love that surrounded Bret as “the most beautiful symbol of a life well lived,” acknowledging how many people found joy and inspiration through his performances and online presence.

Fans on social platforms recalled his warmth and positivity, with one writing that his cheerful live chats and videos “always brought such joy” even on hard days. Another lamented that cancer had taken someone who “put good in the world.”

Bret is survived by his husband Stephen Hanna-Shuford, their son Maverick, his parents Preston and Deanna Hanna, and brothers Todd, Eric, and Bart. In lieu of flowers, the family has encouraged donations to a GoFundMe set up to help with expenses related to Bret’s illness and to support Stephen and Maverick moving forward.

His legacy extends from the stages of Broadway to the hearts of his online community.

May Bret Hanna-Shuford rest in peace. Our thoughts are with Stephen, Maverick, and the entire Hanna-Shuford family as they grieve this profound loss.
