Elton John provided a health update at a recent charity event following the premiere of The Devil Wears Prada musical at London’s Dominion Theatre.

John, who composed the score for the stage adaptation of the beloved 2006 film, reflected on how his impaired vision has affected his ability to fully experience the show visually. Speaking at the event held for the Elton John AIDS Foundation, he acknowledged his husband, David Furnish, 62, for his steadfast support. “To my husband, who’s been my rock, because I haven’t been able to come to many of the previews because, as you know, I’ve lost my eyesight, so it’s hard for me to see it, but I love to hear it,” John said. He added with a smile, “And, boy, it sounded good tonight! OK, thank you for coming!”

The star-studded event, held on Sunday after the premiere of The Devil Wears Prada musical at the Dominion Theatre in London, attracted celebrities like Lily Collins, Elizabeth Hurley, Donatella Versace, and Anna Wintour, all there to celebrate and support the cause.

John first encountered vision issues after contracting a severe infection in the summer of 2024 while in the South of France. By September, he announced on Instagram that his right eye had been seriously affected, leaving him with “limited vision in one eye.”

In a recent interview with Good Morning America, Elton John opened up about how his ongoing health issues have affected his ability to work and create music.

“I unfortunately lost my eyesight in my right eye in July because I had an infection in the south of France, and it’s been four months now since I haven’t been able to see, and my left eye is not the greatest,” the EGOT winner shared.

Elton John explained that the condition has limited his capacity to engage in certain aspects of his career. “So, there’s hope and encouragement that it will be OK, but… I’m kind of stuck at the moment, because I can do something like this (the interview), but going into the studio and recording, I don’t know, because I can’t see a lyric for a start.”

The West End production of The Devil Wears Prada stars Vanessa Williams as Miranda Priestly, Georgie Buckland as Andy Sachs, and Amy Di Bartolomeo as Emily Charlton.  Adapted from Lauren Weisberger’s 2003 novel, the story also inspired the iconic 2006 film.

John’s next venture, Elton John: Never Too Late, premieres on Disney+ this December. The documentary offers an intimate glimpse into his life and career. Named after his song collaboration with Brandi Carlile. Fans can watch it starting December 13.
