Power.
Conspiracy.
Betrayal.
If you love these in a movie (or series, in this case), you might want to check Nicholas Galitzine’s new gay series Mary & George.
The series is said to have been adapted from Benjamin Woolley’s nonfiction book, “The King’s Assassin. The historical drama “Mary & George” unfolds a gripping narrative centered around the conspiracy to assassinate King James I orchestrated by his charming and handsome lover, the Duke of Buckingham. The adaptation delves into the intricate details of this secret plot, providing viewers with a compelling portrayal of the historical intrigue.
In the historical drama Mary & George, Julianne Moore takes on the role of Mary Villiers, the Countess of Buckingham, while Nicholas Galitzine stars as George Villiers, the 1st Duke of Buckingham.
The stellar cast also includes Tony Curran portraying King James I, Laurie Davidson as Robert Carr, the 1st Earl of Somerset, and Trine Dyrholm as Queen Anne. Tom Victor appears as John Villers, the 1st Viscount Purbeck, alongside Amelia Gething as Frances Coke, Viscountess Purbeck, Sean Gilder as Sir Thomas Compton, and Jacob McCarthy as Christopher “Kit” Villers, the 1st Earl of Anglese. The ensemble further features Alice Grant as Susan Villers, also known as Susan Feilding, the Countess of Denbigh, Niamh Algar as Sandie, Nicola Walker as Elizabeth Hatton, Samuel Blenkin as King Charles I, Mirren Mack as Katherine Villiers, the Duchess of Buckingham, Rina Mahoney as Laura Ashcattle, Adrian Rawlins as Sir Edward Coke, and Simon Russell Beale as Sir George Villiers. The cast promises a captivating portrayal of the intricate historical relationships and political intrigues in the series.
According to Sky Atlantic:
Mary & George is inspired by the unbelievable true story of Mary Villiers, who moulded her beautiful and charismatic son, George, to seduce King James VI of Scotland and I of England and become his all-powerful lover. Through outrageous scheming, the pair rose from humble beginnings to become the richest, most titled and influential players the English court had ever seen, and the King’s most trusted advisors. And with England’s place on the world stage under threat from a Spanish invasion and rioters taking to the streets to denounce the King, the stakes could not have been higher.
Prepared to stop at nothing and armed with her ruthless political steel, Mary married her way up the ranks, bribed politicians, colluded with criminals and clawed her way into the heart of the Establishment, making it her own. Mary & George is a dangerously daring historical psychodrama about an outrageous mother and son who schemed, seduced, and killed to conquer the court of England and the bed of King James.
Witness the tumultuous journey of these two individuals as they navigate their way through power dynamics, desire, and ambition in Mary & George, a limited series set to premiere on Starz on April 5.

Happy viewing!
Sometimes –
it is wise –
indeed
to keep it
“All-In-The-Family” –
nothing
more effective and deadly –
than
a “Mommy Cunt”
and
a “Son Cunt”!
Two Cunts
are
better than one!
Psycho-nutcase power- and money-hungry monster Mom uses her boy son as a toy/tool/pawn to go after the old King’s power and money when said King happens to be fond of men, especially young ones.
Swiping left.
But –
Ultimately effective and Memorable!
Effective? Not. Unless we’re talking that people and companies were compensated for their time and investment. Money was made (at least hopefully so!)
Memorable is often as horrible as it is wonderful. In this case, the former (my vote at least).
Calm down, Hunter0500!
It is all about drama and melodrama, two native ingredients of History!
It provides the catalysts for whatever is needed
Someone or something needs to “Rock-The-Boat” and the unfurling of events make
things happen –
good and bad!
How about it’s all about intelligent, thought-provoking drama and melodrama? Not drivel that waves some twinky, young white guy or two (along with his bitchy mother) around and calls such “quality”?
Anyone into this is “meh” is certainly entitled to enjoy it. Same for those who don’t.
A “Period” piece of –
“Whatever Happened To Baby Jane”?
Steamy?
About as exciting as Creme Brulee, Krispy Kreem donuts, and Stanley insulated mugs. A lot of hype but a pile of meh in the end.
If it’s a great script. BBC has lost a lot of ability to do good period shows.
