“Sexual relations of a man with another man, which is punishable by five years imprisonment in a hard labor camp… if there is the slightest truth in that report… nobody can protect you then.”

How far would you go for love, guys?

This is what the trailer of this film got me thinking while I was watching it. I was intrigued as Firebird is reportedly based on a true story, not to mention it is set in the 1970s Soviet Union during the Cold War.

Its official synopsis on YouTube reads:

“Based on a true story during the Cold War, Firebird follows a handsome, soulful young soldier who embarks on a clandestine sexual affair with a charismatic fighter pilot on an Air Force Base in occupied Estonia at the height of 1970’s Communist rule.”

Firebird stars British actor Tom Prior who played the role of Sergey Serebrennikov. Sergey is a young private conscript in the Air Force who wishes to be an actor someday. He was weeks away from freedom, dreaming of college life in a drama school somewhere in Moscow.

Enter fighter pilot Roman Matvejev (played by actor Oleg Zagorodnii). Both of their lives have never been the same since their meeting. Their chemistry was off the charts, but a same-sex love affair’s future means spending many years of their life in a hard labor camp. Would they risk it?

Directed by Peeter Rebane, Firebird also stars Diana Pozharskaya who played the character Luisa, Nicholas Woodeson, who played the role of Colonel Kuznetsov, and Kaspar Velberg, who played the role of a pilot named Selenov.

Anyway, if you love movies that feature handsome soldiers and sexy fighter pilots, then this gay historical romantic drama is for you. Unfortunately, Firebird is not currently available for streaming on Netflix but you can watch it on other streaming platforms like Apple TV, ROW8, Redbox, Prime Video, Vudu, and FlixFling.
