With the global coronavirus pandemic going on for half of the year now, it’s no surprise that some people are looking for answers when it comes to having sex in this pandemic era. After all, people have been in quarantine anywhere from weeks to months, depending on where you are located.

One thing people may be curious about is whether the coronavirus can be transmitted through semen and whether swallowing it means risking infection. Unfortunately, there isn’t a definite yes or no answer to this question due to how new COVID-19 is to doctors and researchers.

Back in May, a study was published on the JAMA Open Network that involved 38 men that were confirmed to have COVID-19. Of the semen samples submitted, six tested positive for the presence of the coronavirus that causes COVID-19.

However, the tiny sample size and the lack of follow-up research makes it impossible to say whether the presence of the coronavirus in semen means anything. Researchers have not determined whether it can be transmitted via semen or how long the virus can survive in it.

Even an FAQ from the Mayo Clinic dated June 16 echoes this. According to the Mayo Clinic, there is no evidence that the coronavirus can be transmitted via semen, but the detection of the virus in semen calls for further study to categorically determine if the virus can indeed be transmitted sexually.

What is certain is that the coronavirus can be caught from respiratory droplets, so most of the sex tips from health officials involve avoiding kissing or making out. Rimming has also been ruled out since COVID-19 has been suspected to spread via fecal-oral transmission.

Wearing a mask during sex has even been recommended to lower the risk of transmission during sex. Taking a bath with soap and water is also advised before and after having sex with someone who does not live with you. Limiting the number of one’s sexual partners is also recommended to make it easier to perform contact tracing should an infection does happen.

Of course, the safest way to engage in sex during the global coronavirus pandemic is either just masturbating or engaging in virtual sex. Sex toys that are kept in disinfected areas and washed properly with soap and water are also the best things to use.
