Bisexual+ Awareness Week highlights the history and resilience of the bisexual+ community. According to GLAAD, co-founder of #BiWeek, we observe this occasion to “accelerate acceptance of the bi+ (bisexual, pansexual, fluid, no label, queer, etc.) community.” GLAAD added that “#BiWeek draws attention to the experiences, while also celebrating the resiliency of, the bisexual+ community.”
On the other hand, Bi Visibility Day is observed on this day each year to “recognize and celebrate bisexual people, the bisexual community, and the history of bisexuality.”
In honor of Bisexual+ Awareness Week and Bi Visibility Day, we compiled five bisexual TV shows and films that you can watch for the whole week and beyond. Also, please feel free to share your favorite bisexual films and TV shows in the comments section below.
- Frida (2002, Julie Taymor)
Frida chronicles the life and works of Mexican artist Frida Kahlo. The film also tells about her dysfunctional relationship with her husband Diego Rivera as well as her love affair with a number of men and women. Reportedly, Frida’s husband encouraged her romantic relationships with women as he himself was unfaithful.
This movie stars Salma Hayek as Frida and Alfred Molina as her husband, Diego Rivera. Other stars include Antonio Banderas, Valeria Golino, Diego Luna, Mia Maestro, Edward Norton, and Geoffrey Rush.
- Velvet Goldmine (1998, Todd Haynes)
This film gives us a glimpse into the 70s British Glam Rock scene. The story centers on glam superstar Brian Slade (played by Jonathan Rhys Meyers) through the eyes of British journalist Arthur Stuart (Christian Bale).
Velvet Goldmine also stars Ewan McGregor as Curt Wild, Toni Collette as Mandy Slade, and Eddie Izzard as Jerry Devine to name a few.
- Appropriate Behavior (2014, Desiree Akhavan)
Appropriate Behavior follows the story of Shirin (Desiree Akhavan), a bisexual Persian American woman in Brooklyn, as she navigates through the aftermath of her breakup with her girlfriend Maxine (Rebecca Henderson).
Appropriate Behavior won the Grand Jury Prize at the San Diego Asian Film Festival in 2014.
- Legends of Tomorrow (2016, Greg Berlanti, Marc Guggenheim, Andrew Kreisberg, and Phil Klemmer)
This DC TV show is about an unlikely group of superheroes and villains time travelling together to save the world from a powerful evil. The Legend’s captain and leader, Sara Lance (played by Caity Lotz), is bisexual. She is considered as the “first character from either Marvel or DC to be explicitly shown as queer in either the movies or TV shows.”
Legends of Tomorrow currently has six seasons with its 7th set to start this October 13, 2021. It also stars Victor Garber, Brandon Routh, Amy Louise Pemberton, and Dominic Purcell, to name a few.
- Kinsey (2004, Bill Condon)
Kinsey chronicles the life of Alfred Charles Kinsey (played by Liam Neeson), a pioneer in the area of human sexuality research. Kinsey is best-known for writing Sexual Behavior in the Human Male (1948) and Sexual Behavior in the Human Female (1953) and for developing the Kinsey scale.
Reportedly, Kinsey and his wife, Clara Brachen McMillen, “were polyamorous, and Kinsey identified as bisexual.”
