Netflix will be releasing a remake of The Boys in the Band this September 30, guys! 

Directed by Joe Mantello, the film is an adaptation to the groundbreaking 1968 play of the same name about gay friendship and their queer chosen family written by the late playwright Mart Crowley. Mantello, by the way, is also the one who directed the revival production for Broadway in 2018 while the actors from said production will return for the movie as well.

The Boys in the Band follows the story of nine gay men as they gather together to celebrate the 30th birthday of one of their friends. 

Michael (portrayed by Jim Parsons), a writer, is hosting the party for Harold (played by Zachary Quinto) in his Upper East Side apartment in New York City. The gathering is to be attended by their friends Donald (portrayed by Matt Bomer), Larry (Andrew Rannells), Emory (Robin De Jesus), Michael Benjamin Washington (Bernard), and Tuc Watkins (Hank). Emory prepared “Cowboy” a hustler, as his “present” to Harold (Cowboy is played by Charlie Carver). 

The boys’ evening however, is thrown into turmoil when Michael’s college roommate Alan (Brian Hutchison) shows up unexpectedly. The party culminates in a telephone game where each man must call someone they loved and tell them about their feelings. Michael—who has long been suspecting that Alan is gay—thought that the latter has “finally ‘outed’ himself when he makes his call.” He had initially expected that Alan but would call some gay man and confess his feelings to him but he discovered that Alan had called his wife instead.

Did you guys know that The Boys in the Band premiered off-Broadway in 1968, a year before the Stonewall riots which happened in 1969? Moreover, the entire cast of the 50th-anniversary revival of the play is openly gay and said revival production won the award for best revival of a play at the 2019 Tony Awards.

According to its page in Tony Awards’ website, The Boys in the Band is “generally considered the first commercially successful play in history to depict gay men’s lives onstage—unapologetically and without judgment.” 

The Boys in the Band also has a 1970 film version directed by William Friedkin. It has a sequel titled Men from the Boys released in 2002.
