Anyway, the World Health Organization (WHO) is encouraging people to exercise during self-quarantine and they have several suggestions on how to stay physically active while at home even without the use of special equipment and even with limited space. The United Nation’s health agency recommends for all healthy adults to “do 30 mins of physical activity per day,” or “at least 150 minutes of moderate physical activity every week” check below how:
- Take short active breaks during the day – sample exercises that WHO suggested include dancing and doing our daily household chores like cleaning the house and gardening.
- Attend an online exercise class – you are only a click away as many of these exercise classes are on YouTube, and most of them are free! WHO however, reminded us to be “cautious and aware of our own limitations if we have no experience performing these exercises.” Below is a sample video that’s not exactly an online class with regular/daily schedule but the vlogger has awesome exercise suggestions that we can do at home and even without equipment:
- Walk – yes, walking can help us remain active. We can walk up and down the stairs, we can walk around the house while talking to someone on the phone instead of remaining seated, and we can also “go outside to walk or exercise,” but WHO reminds that we be “sure to maintain at least a 1-meter distance from other people.”
Working from home means people are sitting longer. It is important for your health to get up often, for at least 3 minutes, to stretch your muscles.

- Stand up – according to WHO, we can lessen our sedentary time by simply standing up as much as we can or at least every 30 minutes. They also remind us to “prioritize cognitively stimulating activities, such as reading, board games, and puzzles during sedentary leisure time.”
- Relax – Needless to say, anxiety is currently at an all-time high thanks to the COVID-19 crisis. The good news is that meditation and deep breaths can help us remain calm. Check here for tips on how to do it.
