The Academy Awards may have previously received criticism for being “so white,” but this year the ceremony made quite the turnaround as it got “so gay” throughout. Oscars were handed out to actors portraying characters that fell under the LGBTQ spectrum, and the film that won Best Picture features a gay character in a supporting role.
Rami Malek was named Best Actor for his portrayal of bisexual Queen frontman Freddie Mercury, while Olivia Colman was named Best Actress for portraying a woman-loving Queen Anne. Mahershala Ali became a two-time Oscar winner after being awarded the Best Supporting Actor trophy for his role as Don Shirley, the gay American classical and jazz pianist and composer. “Green Book,” the film where Ali portrayed Shirley, also won Best Picture.
The show was also opened by gay performer Adam Lambert, who sang a spectacular rendition of “We Will Rock You” and “Champions” at the start of the show. On the red carpet, Pose star Billy Porter stole the show with his tux dress, possibly paying homage to ballroom legend Hector Xtravaganza.

Yes, it appeared that The Academy bent over backwards to not be too white last night.
BTW, Freddie Mercury was gay. Shame on the author for watering that down.
Maybe you should watch the movie and read about Freddie who was openly bisexual. Many media are talking about it since the movie came out, here’s one : https://www.billboard.com/articles/news/pride/8483779/freddie-mercury-bisexuality-bohemian-rhapsody-queen
I thought, having to been there at the time, was not watered down. It was a solid response to the reality of the day … he didn’t flaunt it and didn’t hide it.
I was pulling for either Lady Gaga or Melissa McCarthy over Olivia Colman. It seems like we easily awards Oscars to British actors with accents over our own home grown performers.
Sam Elliot was my pick for Supporting Actor (Mahershala Ali has one from last year that I thought was more deserving), but hey.
I was hoping BlacKKKlansman might win, but I’m glad Spike Lee finally has an Oscar win for writing.
Overall, the choices are acceptable and understandable in that there were plenty of good possibilities this year, so I’m not really too disappointed. GOOD JOB, OSCARS!!!
They become ever more meaningless. When a crappy director like Spike Lee gets an Oscar and Glenn Close, our greatest actress, does not, you know they are pandering and have no standards.
Glenn Close our greatest? After 7 nominations, if she doesn’t win, it means something.
Apparently he is not a crappy director if he is famous and sucessful. His movies have won plenty of awards and entertained millions…Have you ever seen a damn spike lee movie? And pandering? Really… So none of the ethnic people who won anything truly deserved it huh? LOL..and now they mean nothing huh? ..but your NOT racist right? …that is what you will say…. Girl bye… Another mad hater….
Who? What?
I was hoping that “Bohemian Rhapsody” or “A Star is Born” would get best picture. Right now they are my two favorite movies. I have yet to watch “Green Book” but it sounds quite entertaining. I did see “Black Panther” and yes there was some very good acting, but I’m not so much into super hero type movies. But I am glad that finally they did make a super hero movie featuring a black cast. I also enjoyed the “BlackKklansman” and found it enlightening, entertaining and comical.
It’s okay to be white! 🙂
Well, I’m white, and it’s also ok to be black! It seems as if there is as much discrimination today as ever. Yes, laws can legislate equal rights, but the public just hasn’t come to accept it. Always hear comments, degrading black people. I frequently go to a Walmart that is in a black area, and I was told by a white friend, “Hey you better be careful, you might just get shot” What a racist statement! Actually everyone there has always been friendly and helpful, regardless of their skin color, and never had a problem with anyone. Younger people… Read more »
For those locked into every breath of Hollywood elite, the 2019 Academy Awards show was a sigh of relief; viewership was up over 10% from last year! This number is critical in light of a drop off of over 33% overall in viewership since a decade ago (which makes the 10% less impactful, but I digress). Watched “Black Panther” this past Saturday. A great movie on several fronts! Shortly after the closing credits begin, they stop. We’re brought into an address to the United Nations (UN) by the movie’s’ lead character. He tells the UN that it is imperative that… Read more »
