Fans of Heartstopper are getting ready to say goodbye to one of television’s most beloved LGBTQ+ romances. If you’ve been following the show, Netflix is giving the beloved coming-of-age romance a cinematic send-off with the feature-length film Heartstopper Forever, which premieres on July 17, 2026.
Based on the bestselling graphic novels by Alice Oseman, Heartstopper Forever continues the story of Nick Nelson and Charlie Spring as they face the biggest challenge of their relationship so far. Nick is preparing to leave for university, while Charlie is settling into a new chapter of life at school. As the possibility of a long-distance relationship becomes real, both must decide whether first love can survive the changes that come with growing up. Meanwhile, their close-knit group of friends is also facing new challenges, new relationships, personal growth, and the uncertainty of adulthood.
Alice Oseman once envisioned Heartstopper ending after four television seasons, but the story will instead conclude with a movie adapting the sixth and final volume of the graphic novel series. Oseman wrote the screenplay and described the film as an exploration of “time, memory, love, pain, the changing of the seasons, endings and beginnings,” while preserving the warmth and optimism that made the series a global phenomenon. “The movie will be an exploration of time, memory, love, pain, the changing of the seasons, endings and beginnings, and the core element of Heartstopper: the ordinary magic of our everyday lives,” Oseman said in an interview with Tudum.
The film is directed by Wash Westmoreland, with Oseman serving as screenwriter and executive producer. Leading stars Joe Locke returns as Charlie Spring and Kit Connor reprises his role as Nick Nelson. The two actors also serve as executive producers for the first time. Returning cast members include Yasmin Finney as Elle Argent, William Gao as Tao Xu, Corinna Brown as Tara Jones, Kizzy Edgell as Darcy Olsson, Tobie Donovan as Isaac Henderson, Jenny Walser as Tori Spring, and Rhea Norwood as Imogen Heaney. The finale also welcomes acclaimed actors Derek Jacobi in a new role and Anna Maxwell as Martin Nick’s mother, Sarah Nelson, replacing Olivia Colman from the series.
Since debuting in 2022, Heartstopper has earned praise for its heartfelt portrayal of LGBTQ+ teenagers, mental health, friendship, and first love. The series became one of Netflix’s most celebrated queer dramas, resonating with audiences of all ages thanks to its hopeful storytelling and authentic representation. In recent interviews, Connor and Locke said the final film reflects the characters’ emotional growth and tackles more mature themes as Nick and Charlie prepare for adulthood, while still delivering the hopeful message fans have come to expect.
Whether you’ve followed Nick and Charlie from the beginning or recently discovered the series, Heartstopper Forever promises to deliver one final heartfelt chapter. Fans can expect familiar friendships, emotional goodbyes, and a celebration of the love story that captured millions of hearts around the world.
“These characters have meant a lot to us over the years,” Connor said in an interview. “As EPs, it feels like we can really say goodbye to them in a way that feels the most right. It is bittersweet, but it is also a really nice way of ending it.” Locke agreed, further noting, “This show has meant so much to me in my life. I’ll always carry that with me.”
