Finally, we get a first look at Harry Styles’ upcoming film called My Policeman that’s been the talk on social media for over a year now.
In My Policeman, Harry Styles plays the character named Tom, a closeted gay policeman. Tom was in a relationship with a museum curator named Patrick (David Dawson), but then he marries his longtime friend Marion, a school teacher; hence, the beginning of their romantic entanglement and love triangle.
The movie is set in the 1950s Britain, which means that at the time, gay sex is illegal as the country won’t decriminalize “private homosexual acts between men aged over 21” until the year 1967 through the Sexual Offences Act. And gay marriage in the UK wasn’t legalized until July 2013, so I’m really curious about what life was like for them then and how these issues affected their decisions in life.
My Policeman is adapted from a book of the same name by Bethan Roberts. In addition, the book’s publisher Penguin Books says that its story is also based on the life of English writer E. M. Forster.
Below is the official synopsis of the film:
“A beautifully crafted story of forbidden love and changing social conventions, My Policeman follows three young people – policeman Tom (Harry Styles), teacher Marion (Emma Corrin), and museum curator Patrick (David Dawson) – as they embark on an emotional journey in 1950s Britain. Flashing forward to the 1990s, Tom (Linus Roache), Marion (Gina McKee), and Patrick (Rupert Everett) are still reeling with longing and regret, but now they have one last chance to repair the damage of the past. Based on the book by Bethan Roberts, director Michael Grandage carves a visually transporting, heart-stopping portrait of three people caught up in the shifting tides of history, liberty, and forgiveness.”
Harry Styles rose to fame as one of the members of the English-Irish pop boy band One Direction. This is not Styles’ first film. He already previously appeared in movies specifically: Dunkirk, Eternals, and Don’t Worry Darling.
My Policeman is coming to select theaters near you on October 21, 2022, and Prime Video on November 4.
Happy viewing!
I don’t keep up with boy bands. Until recently, I didn’t even know who he was. Is Harry Styles gay?
No, I don’ think so.
He’s not but he’s an ally and has some serious swag imho
Styles’ refusal to open up about his sexuality has led some to accuse him of using his ambiguous sexuality to appeal to the LGBTQ community. He denied this accusation during an interview with The Guardian: “Am I sprinkling in nuggets of sexual ambiguity to try and be more interesting? No… I want things to look a certain way. Not because it makes me look gay, or it makes me look straight, or it makes me look bisexual, but because I think it looks cool. And more to that, I dunno, I just think sexuality’s something that’s fun.” He is not unique in… Read more »
Not surprisingly, it is appealing to The Community when individuals are ambiguous, fluid about their sex, naming those who do not identify as male or female the charming name “binary.” When it comes to being fluid, ambiguous about sexuality, The Community becomes offended. Is it in the case of Harry Styles that instead of being Gay, he could be Bisexual or even Straight?
The charming name, actually, is “non-binary.”
“Queer” is a totally inappropriate word choice, considering the period in which this is set,
when it was used purely as hate speech. For anyone older than say, 40, it is still hate speech
and offensive, and should not be used casually.
Harry Styles has been personal with his sexuality for years. As an early 2022 article states, “And Harry seems very secure with his undisclosed identity, with him calling speculation over his sexuality “outdated.” He’s not a fan of labels or boxes that The Community and Society try to force him into. He says his sexuality is fluid and really no one’s business but his own. He acts and dresses himself as he feels at a given moment. As is his right. It will be interesting to see how Hollywood and The Community react to this movie in which a… Read more »
