Remember what is real.

Are you a fan of the Wachowski sisters’ Matrix franchise, guys? If so, you’ll be thrilled to know that there is another film coming soon to theaters near you starting December 22. You can also start streaming the film digitally on HBO Max in the United States on that same date.

The movie is titled The Matrix Resurrections (2021, Lana Wachowski). The last installment before this was shown in 2003, it’s clearly been 18 years since then and during this period, the Wachowski sisters had, time and time again, shot down rumors of a fourth installment. Fast forward to 2019 and an announcement regarding the fourth installment was made.

But what changed?

According to the Wachowski sisters, or at least for Lana Wachowski’s part, it was the passing of their parents. In an interview, she said that the revival of the franchise was “a means of comfort.” Further, she talked about how it “helped her cope with grief.” Lana explained:

My dad died, then this friend died, then my mom died. I didn’t really know how to process that kind of grief. I hadn’t experienced it that closely. . . You know their lives are going to end and yet it was still really hard. My brain has always reached into my imagination and one night, I was crying and I couldn’t sleep, and my brain exploded this whole story. And I couldn’t have my mom and dad, yet suddenly I had Neo and Trinity, arguably the two most important characters in my life.”

But why did her sister, Lilly Wachowski, didn’t want to do another Matrix film? Well, according to Lilly, “revisiting the storyline would actually feel like emotional labor.”

[Lana] had come up with this idea for another Matrix movie, and we had this talk, and it was actually — we started talking about it in between [our] dad dying and [our] mom dying, which was like five weeks apart. And there was something about the idea of going backward and being a part of something that I had done before that was expressly unappealing. And, like, I didn’t want to have gone through my transition and gone through this massive upheaval in my life, the sense of loss from my mom and dad, to want to go back to something that I had done before, and sort of [walk] over old paths that I had walked in, felt emotionally unfulfilling, and really the opposite — like I was going to go back and live in these old shoes, in a way. And I didn’t want to do that.”

As you all probably know by now, the Wachowski sisters had both co-written and directed the previous Matrix installments. Read more about it here.

Anyway, you can expect actors Keanu Reeves, Carrie-Anne Moss, Lambert Wilson, and Jada Pinkett Smith in the new film as they will be reprising their roles. On the other hand, they will be joined by Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Jessica Henwick, Jonathan Groff, Neil Patrick Harris, Priyanka Chopra Jonas, and Christina Ricci.

Meanwhile, Keanu Reeves talked about leaping off a 40-story building for a scene in “The Matrix Resurrections for about 19 or 20 times on “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert.”

When asked by the host why they didn’t just do the scene digitally, Reeves said, “Because it’s [director] Lana Wachowski, its ‘The Matrix’ and you need natural light and you want to do it real. I mean, there’s wires.” He added, “After the first time, you can’t think of.. the fear. You have to, not block it, but deal with it, absorb it and just be there and do. And that’s what we did.”
