After revealing their theme for 2020, New York City Pride has now revealed that out pansexual singer and actress Janelle Monáe will be the headliner for New York City’s Pride Island.

Other performers joining Monáe on Saturday are Betty Who, Luisa Sonza, and Pussy Riot. Twin designers and DJs Coco and Breezy will also perform. Monáe called the opportunity to perform “a dream.”

“Pride means so much to so many of us, and to have the opportunity to share my live performance during Pride has always been a dream,” she said. “Celebrating Pride in NYC is a rite of passage for a queer person, I am grateful for the community it creates and I can’t wait to party with everyone.”

While the headliners and performers for Friday and Saturday night haven’t been announced, they are sure to be big names if last year’s set of performers are anything to go by. For the 2019 celebrations, Madonna, the iconic Grace Jones, Pablo Vittar, Teyana Taylor, Amara La Negra, and DJ Johnny Dynell were part of the list of performers.

Monáe’s most recent performance was at the Academy Awards where she called out the awards ceremony by singing “It’s time to come alive, because the Oscars is so white.”

This year’s New York City Pride will be using the theme “The Future Is…”. In their tweet revealing the theme, New York City Pride explains it was chosen because  it “is inclusive of identity, ethnicity, age, body types, language and religious beliefs. The theme connects our storied past, milestones, and promising future.”

As Pride approaches, New York City Pride will also be revealing the stories of the people and influencers featured in the video that accompanied the theme reveal. New York City Pride 2020 will be held from June 14 to June 28.
