Hey guys! Let’s get to know each other. What’s your current job, and what did you major in if you went to college?
A gay man online recently sparked a discussion on careers after asking, “What industry are we all in? I recently read a statistic that gays tend to be more likely to pursue higher education compared to straight men. I’m curious what we’re all doing. I’m in med school right now.”
The question quickly turned into a conversation about careers, education, and ambition across the gay community online. Are gay men really more likely to pursue higher education? And if so, does that influence the kinds of jobs and industries they end up in? From skilled trades to medicine and academia, the responses painted a wide-ranging picture.
The discussion connects to real research on education within the LGBTQ+ community. According to a 2021 article published by the University World News, University of Notre Dame sociologist Joel Mittleman found that gay men are 44% more likely than straight men to earn a university degree. His research, titled “Intersecting the Academic Gender Gap: The Education of Lesbian, Gay and Bisexual America,” analyzed data from national surveys involving hundreds of thousands of adults and students. The study also noted that this educational advantage was not limited to white gay men, with Black, Hispanic, and Asian gay men also outperforming straight men in degree attainment by double-digit margins. One of the funniest and most relatable responses came from a commenter who wrote, “Haha, just a welder here.” The thread was immediately filled with appreciation. One person answered, “We love welders.” Another added, “Yeah, something about that IRON and STEEL, honey! ♥” A third commenter joked, “And knowing how to handle a rod :p hahaha, sorry I had to.” Beyond the flirting and humor, though, many readers pointed out that skilled trades deserve far more respect than they often receive online.
In addition, other commenters represented highly specialized and academic professions. One man shared, “I’m a statistician.” Another wrote, “I work as a classical musician (organ, piano, harpsichord, conducting) and have my Doctor of Musical Arts.” That response stood out because careers in classical music require years of training, discipline, and education that many people outside the field rarely see. Tech careers also appeared throughout the discussion, including one commenter who straightforwardly wrote, “software engineer.”
Education-heavy professions were also strongly represented. One gay man replied, “I’m a professor.” Another shared, “I’m a data scientist in finance.” Both careers reflect industries where advanced degrees and analytical skills are highly valued. Medicine, academia, finance, and tech have long been spaces where many LGBTQ+ professionals pursue stability, intellectual challenge, and upward mobility.
Further, some careers immediately caught readers’ attention because of their image and lifestyle. “I’m an airline pilot,” one man wrote, drawing admiration from others in the thread. Aviation remains one of those professions associated with travel, responsibility, and prestige. Another commenter shared, “I’m an Accountant.”
The thread made one thing very clear: there is no single “gay profession.” Some gay men pursue graduate school and advanced degrees, while others build rewarding careers through trades, arts, business, or technical work.
Having said all that, what about you, Adam4Adam blog readers, do you think gay men are more likely to pursue higher education, or does it just appear that way online? Moreover, what industry are you currently working in, and how did you end up there? Share your career paths, experiences, and thoughts in the comments section down below!

Now, there’s a thought to ponder. Other than being a male who has sex with other males, is there anything the is “singularly Gay”?
Style of dress. Music choices. Religion. Political party. Physical or mental health issues. Food preferences. Relationships. Financial position. Nope, none of them.
Is there anything really “singularly Gay” other than sex?
