In a shocking incident at a Washington, D.C., Shake Shack store, a gay man claims he was beaten by several employees after sharing a kiss with his boyfriend while waiting for their food.
The victim, Christian Dingus, 28, was at the Dupont Circle location on Saturday night of August 17 with his partner and friends when the incident unfolded. Dingus recalled that after briefly kissing his boyfriend, a Shake Shack worker approached them, insisting that such behavior was not allowed.
“And while we were back there — kind of briefly — we began to kiss,” Dingus said in an interview with NBC News. “And at that point, a worker came out to us and said that, you know, you can’t be doing that here, can’t do that type of stuff here.”
Dingus explained that they stopped kissing as requested, but his partner – who got upset with the employee – asserted that they had done nothing wrong. Allegedly, Dingus’ partner was then escorted out of the restaurant, leading to a heated verbal exchange. When Dingus stood up for his partner, telling the staff not to speak to him that way, “I started yelling at them, saying you have no right to do this. Leave him alone.”
The confrontation escalated, leading to the attack. Multiple employees knocked him to the ground and repeatedly punched and kicked him.
“And then one of the men, pretty forcefully, like, pushed me out of the way on my shoulder,” Dingus said. “And then, you know, next thing I know, that kind of just, I think, sparked the rest of them. … They all just kind of started attacking me at that point, dragging me back through the floor and continuously punching me in my head.”
A bystander recorded the incident on video, which has since been widely shared on social media. The footage shows a man being attacked by several others, though the identities of those involved are not clearly visible.
Despite being in significant pain, Dingus initially declined medical assistance at the scene but later visited a hospital “after he experienced intense pain in his jaw, which was severely bruised but was not broken.” The diagnosis included a concussion and trauma to his jaw, along with significant swelling and bruising on the side of his face. He was treated and released the following day.
In response to the incident, Shake Shack issued a statement confirming that the employees involved have been suspended. The statement reads:
We are aware of the incident on Saturday, Aug. 17 involving team members and a guest at our Dupont Circle location and are taking it very seriously. At Shake Shack, the safety and well-being of our guests and team members are our top priorities, and we have a zero-tolerance policy for any form of violence. We are fully cooperating with local authorities in their investigation and have suspended the team members involved pending further review. We are committed to taking the appropriate actions based on the findings.
The police report categorizes the assault as a “simple assault” and a “suspected” hate crime. Although no arrests have been made yet as of press time, Dingus has expressed his desire to press charges. D.C. police spokesperson Paris Lewbel confirmed that the investigation is ongoing and that all evidence will be submitted to the United States Attorney’s Office for review, “All facts and evidence in the case will be presented to the United States Attorney’s Office for a determination on charges.”
The incident has deeply affected Dingus’ sense of safety and security, and he expressed a desire for the perpetrators to be held responsible. “You hear all the time that this stuff happens, but, you know, I started kind of believing that it didn’t, right?” Dingus said. “I’ve been … thinking of progress and how great that community is here, and then for that all to kind of be shattered, you know, kind of sucks.”

This attack is totally hate and totally unwarranted. Those who committed physical and/verbal abuse should be prosecuted. They should undergo mandatory anti-hate counseling/training and be sent back to work with a name tag staying “Anti-hate Training Certified’ discreetly below their name.
For Gay couples, yes Public Displays of Affection are to be accepted. But maybe, just maybe, some discretion should take place and they should be minimal in any location that is not known to be totally Gay friendly. Acceptance everywhere is coming. We’re just not there today.
Sir, you said it all and I totally agree with everything you said!! I’m not a fan of public display of affection from any couple gay or straight, but he didn’t deserve to be assaulted to that extent.
to that extent?
The phrase “to that extent” is an adverb that means “to that degree”
Yes I know what it means. Did they deserve to be assaulted just not to that degree? Very strange wording
This was Dupont Circle. They had every reason to think that they were in a gay-friendly environment.
Maybe DC claims to be Gay Friendly.
Maybe Dupont Circle does.
The employees in the Shake Shack store were not 100% on board with the concept. This could be the case anywhere in the world.
We don’t know the details yet. Authorities will uncover them. One question could be the motivation for the alleged victims to be in the store at that particular time. What did they know about the employees? Were they trying to make a point?
Time will tell.
assault is already illegal.
Hello Moderators. This comment is in line with the rules for behavior on this site?? If so Hunter 0500 can reply “Dear Fucking Asshole Used Shitty douche Bag, go fuck yourself. No one else will, loser.” Right??
It’s fine to disagree. In fact, the commenter and I do agree assault is unacceptable. So what’s his problem? The response us hateful, rude and vulgar, certainly violating the site’s Rules.
Thank you.
Since my post, fuqYop’s nasty post has been edited to a cleaner yet now irrelevant version. Thanks, I guess.
Utterly ridiculous. They need to be locked up for at least a year. Then, maybe, more “training” in how to be a human being.
That Rayciss. Probably anti-semitic too
“Those who committed physical and/verbal abuse should be prosecuted.” Then made to return to work wearing a Dunce Cap for a name tag.
I would say there’s more to the story.
Blame the parents.
Their kind don’t have parents. Just sperm donators and incubators
NOOOO………………….
THERE IS MORE TO THIS STORY HERE………
please share with us the real story then. Whatever the case is, it’s not right to go around beating people (and animals in general) up.
No one knows the ‘real’ story but it’s ok to question what we’re told
It’s ok to question what we’re told, but as I said, it’s not right to go around beating up people (and animals in general). Whatever happened here, violence is not the answer.
Oh, I don’t know. Here in Texas the gay guy could have whipped out a gun and planted all the assailants where they stood. I’m pretty sure that would have ended any further assailing. Perhaps the DA then would have given the gay guy a small medal in appreciation for his service to the community in ridding it of such thugs while saving taxpayer money. That would seem like a reasonable outcome to me. Unless it happened in Austin, of course, where such thuggery is tolerated
what freaking world do you inhabit? kumbaya and mantras…. what a wimp
realities of the post covid-19 world?
Did you notice the suspicious fact that dicks and assholes are always the most anti-gay, and isn’t it funny that they are always so eager to touch gay people?
Are they really offended–or over-compensating?
Usual suspects I see…..of course this won’t be published.
A lot of information is missing. What was said or done before the “attack”? That area is very LGBTQ friendly, so it’s a bit of a surprise that it would be a simple hate crime. Some folks who claim to have been at the restaurant on the day say the couple and their friends were being obnoxious, and even berating the staff with profanity [including racial slurs]. We don’t know if that is true or not, but I definitely need more information on this one.
Call blaccs n***s get stomped. Nothing unusual about that
No, nothing unusual about that at all. Except for the fact that it’s OK for them to call each other the same thing with impunity. Yet somehow it’s racist if somebody of another race calls them that.
That’s their word. Getting all the BBC is worth it for the occasional beatings, robberies and various forms of unalivings
Wow, you shouldn’t discuss culture/s that ‘you’ don’t understand; or maybe ask questions at least? You do not have to like it. Ok, then, here it is in short form: “Nigger” and “Nigga” are two different spellings, mean different things, again, to ‘US’ that is. ‘WE’ decided . . . and there’s no apologies for your exclusion/s either, why should there be at this point? It’s been such an ugly history on the part of the American caucasian, that we took such an ugly slur (knowing it’s not going away), turning it into a term of brotherhood-giving it among ‘us’,… Read more »
As long as the culture is dominated by those who shun responsibility and blame their failings on somebody else nothing will change. I’ve heard some of them call each other both versions of the word yet, out of all black people I have come in contact with, I’ve never heard the word spoken by the majority of them. Democracy? Is that your interpretation when a subculture which is a relatively low percentage of the population assumes to tell the majority what language will be used? Have you ever wondered why the singled out and set apart phenomenon has come to… Read more »
This incident has been repeatedly reported. The reports, except one, look like “cut and paste” versions. It’s widely reported in minor media outlets, while only being on a handful of major ones.
The one reported that witnesses to the incident early on reported that the alleged victims contributed to the incident becoming inflamed. Certainly, that contribution would not negate the behavior of the alleged attackers. It would, however, affect the responsibility.
A week has passed. Nothing from the authorities. Must be that statements from those involved are conflicting.
It’s always wise to question, and never assume. Aside from this incident, whatever is the truth, gays have to remember that if someone like Trump becomes president, he/his administration can reverse laws and rights with his handpicked Supreme Court. And not just gay marriage. People are always watching your behavior and if you take too much for granted now, you may regret it later. Be kind to each other and others.
President Trump is not concerned with LGTBQ+ individuals. He’s focused on issues affecting ALL citizens of the US: the cost of energy and inflation which over the past four years have cost all US citizens dearly when it comes to energy, housing, cars, and jobs. Along with them, he’ll work on terrorism and wars which have blossomed since he left office. While not personally supporting abortion, he’s made it clear that complex issue for citizens in the individual States to make wrestle about, NOT the President or Congress. Detractors claim he’ll just making rich Republican friends wealthier. He’ll make the… Read more »
Boo fucking hoo!!!
Such interesting behavior…
Too funny…
You must always go to the hospital.
I hope they are charged with attempted murder. Ganging up on someone like that with stomping, body-thrust punches is not just hitting, that’s trying to kill someone. They need to be locked up.
You be raycist
As enraged as this can make us, it’s not legally close to attempted murder. Thank God we have Justice system and not one run by a lynch mob. They’ll get what they deserve, far from a legal definition of attempted murder.
