Muhsin Hendricks, widely regarded as the world’s first openly gay imam and a vocal advocate for LGBTQ+ Muslims, was shot and killed in South Africa. The incident occurred in Bethelsdorp near Gqeberha (formerly Port Elizabeth), and authorities are currently investigating the motive behind his murder.

According to a statement from the Eastern Cape police force, “Two unknown suspects with covered faces got out of the vehicle and started firing multiple shots at the vehicle.” They added, “Thereafter they fled the scene, and the driver noticed that Hendricks, who was seated at the back of the vehicle was shot and killed.”
A police spokesperson confirmed to AFP that a video circulating on social media appears to show a targeted killing. However, the authenticity of the footage is still under review as part of the ongoing investigation. “The motive for the murder is unknown and forms part of the ongoing investigation,” police stated, urging anyone with relevant information to come forward.
Hendricks was a trailblazer in LGBTQ+ Muslim advocacy. He came out as gay in 1996 and, two years later, began hosting support meetings in Cape Town for LGBTQ+ Muslims who struggled with acceptance within their religious communities. “I opened my garage, put a carpet down and invited people to have tea and talk,” he told the Guardian in 2022.
Muhsin Hendricks, the world’s first openly gay imam, was tragically killed. His legacy proves that faith and queerness can coexist but too many LGBTQ+ people still face rejection or violence in religious spaces.

Question: Why is LGBTQ+ inclusion still seen as a threat? pic.twitter.com/XgFp05UMLN
Over time, he founded The Inner Circle (2004), an organization dedicated to helping queer Muslims reconcile their faith and sexuality. He also ran Masjidul Ghurba, a mosque that provided a safe space for LGBTQ+ Muslims. Hendricks’ work often put him at odds with conservative religious figures, but he remained steadfast in his mission, calling for inclusive interpretations of Islamic teachings.
Meanwhile, various Human rights organizations and LGBTQ+ advocacy groups have condemned Hendricks’ killing, calling for a thorough investigation. The International Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans and Intersex Association (ILGA) expressed deep concern over what they fear may have been a targeted attack.
“The ILGA World family is in deep shock at the news of the murder of Muhsin Hendricks, and calls on authorities to thoroughly investigate what we fear may be a hate crime,” ILGA’s executive director, Julia Ehrt, said in a statement.
South Africa, despite having some of the most progressive LGBTQ+ rights laws on the continent, continues to witness violent attacks against queer individuals. Advocacy groups are urging the government to ensure that justice is served and that the LGBTQ+ community remains protected.
As investigations continue, many of Hendricks’ supporters fear that his murder could have been motivated by his advocacy. While police have not confirmed any links to hate crime, his prominence as a gay Muslim leader has raised concerns that his killing may be a result of intolerance.
Hendricks leaves behind a legacy of courage, inclusivity, and resilience. His work helped countless LGBTQ+ Muslims find a sense of belonging within their faith, and his influence will continue to be felt worldwide.
Authorities have urged anyone with information to step forward, as the search for justice continues. For more information, read here and here.
