Truth be told, size shouldn’t matter. But it’s also true that some of us get defensive when it comes to talking about our dick size, so much so that we’ve even come up with the terms “grower” and “shower” to describe the difference in size between our flaccid penis and our erect one.

In case someone doesn’t know what the terms mean, a grower is a penis that gets longer when it becomes erect, while a shower is a penis that doesn’t show a lot of change when it becomes erect. But are there really growers and showers or are these terms just witty ways to talk about dick size?

As it turns out, there’s actual published scientific research about this. The 2018 study “Grower or shower? Predictors of change in penile length from the flaccid to erect state” was published in the International Journal of Impotence Research and actually determined whether a penis is a grower or a shower.

According to the research, the average change in penis size from flaccid to erect is 1.5 inches. Using that baseline, the researchers determined that a person is a grower if their penis grows more than 1.5 inches when erect. A shower is someone who grows less than 1.5 inches. Around 26 percent of the study’s 274 participants turned out to be growers, experiencing an average two-inch increase in length. The rest of the participants were showers who had an average length change of about an inch.

As to who gets to be a grower and who gets to be a shower, it’s determined by factors like tissue elasticity, collagen, and overall health.

A penis gets hard because the tissues that make it up — from the skin, to the fibrous tissue, and the ligaments — are elastic. It just so happens that some guys have much more elastic tissue compared to others. Collagen also makes up almost half of the tissues of your penis, which is why it is a determining factor. Both tissue elasticity and the amount of collagen are determined by genes, so there’s really nothing much that can be done about it.

One’s overall health affects the erection as well because blood flow is what makes a penis erect. Health conditions that affect blood flow are going to also affect erections. These health conditions include diabetes, heart conditions, and erectile dysfunction.

If erectile dysfunction is the problem, there are now pharmaceutical ways that this can be dealt with. One such solution is provided by Adam4Adam’s pharmacy partner BlueChew. Customers choose between Sildenafil or Tadalafil, which are the active ingredients in Viagra and Cialis. A digital consultation with a physician, monthly refills, and medical support are also provided.

Adam4Adam readers, we’d like to know if you guys are growers or showers? Does your dick grow more than 1.5 inches when it gets hard? Tell us all about it in the comments below!
